Conquering Test Anxiety

Test anxiety is a less ideal state to be in before, during and after a test. It can result in lower than expected test scores–which no one wants! Through practice, you can train yourself to be more relaxed, reduce your test anxiety and achieve test scores that reflect your true potential.

Here are some ways to overcome test anxiety:

  1. Develop an “anchor” or way of triggering a relaxed state. This can be your personal physical reminder to relax. It can be as simple as tapping your knee three times.
  2. Learn how to study efficiently. Look into resources your school offers, find test-taking strategies, etc. Being prepared can help ease test anxiety.
  3. Begin studying early and in similar places. Rather than cramming, studying a bit over time is much more efficient. If you’re able to, try to study in the place (or someplace similar to) where you’ll be taking the test. This can help with information recall when it comes time for the test.
  4. Similar to a pre-game ritual, establish a pre-test routine! Find what works for you to ease your stress level and feel more prepared. Whether it’s a go-to snack, looking over your study guide, a study game, etc.
  5. Get plenty of sleep. Sleep and academic performance are directly related. A good night’s sleep allows for optimal performance.
  6. Talk with your teacher or professor. If you have questions about the material or need clarification on something, don’t be afraid to reach out to the instructor. If you feel comfortable, it may be worth mentioning your test anxiety to them. They may have suggestions or ways they can help you succeed.

Test anxiety is very normal and more common than you think. For some, it may never go away and there is no simple end-all-be-all solution. But being self-aware and prepared can help you to be ready to take that test!
